 Between the south airport and the island capital of Santa Cruz, just off the motorway and inland towards the mountains lies sleepy Arafo, renowned for its passion for Canarian music, its panoramic views and its whitewashed houses garlanded with a multitude of colourful geraniums.
At its heart is the town square where, under the shade of laurel trees, the locals meet to enjoy a meal, a glass of wine or to indulge their passion for music with an impromptu sing-song.
This town is watched over by the church of San Juan Degollado, which dates back to 1673 and contains a number of fine art pieces.
Arafo offers a little known gateway to Teide National Park and also nearby is Montaña de Las Arenas (1,589m), the scene of volcanic eruptions in 1705 and 1706 that sent rivers of lava pouring into the sea.
An impressive walkway connects Montaña de Las Arenas to Montaña de la Cruzita (2,054m).
