Medano, the surfing capital of the island
 El Médano, a former fishing village, has some of the island's best beaches - fine golden sand rather than the black lava sand found at many other resorts.
The beaches, over a mile long, are gently sloping and the shallow waters of the bay make it an ideal location for families with small children.
Strong winds are a feature of the area, making El Médano a popular surfing destination. World Cup events are held here every year.
El Médano is an ideal base for most other water sports - swimming, paragliding, kitesurfing.
A magnificent plaza with cafés, restaurants and business of all kinds is right next to the beach, while the nudist beach of Playa Pelada is tucked away behind the majestic volcanic cone of Montaña Roja.
