  San Juan de la Rambla

San Juan de la Rambla

San Juan de la Rambla, where time stands still...

Time seems to have stood still in the small fishing town of San Juan de la Rambla just north of the resort of Puerto de la Cruz.

Most tourists simply drive past it on their way to Icod de los Vinos.

But it is worth making a small detour to take in historic centre with its old buildings and to enjoy the fine promenade at the adjacent beach of Las Aguas, which boasts a fine sea swimming pool, some excellent fish restaurants and a small pebbly beach.

Banana plantations abound in the fields around the town, which is the heart of one of the smallest municipalities on the island.

Wine production has long been important to the economy of the town, which forms part of the Denominacíon de Origen of Ycoden-Daute-Isora region.
Back in the 17th century locally-produced Malvasia wine graced the finest tables in Europe.

During June 2009, my husband spent time visiting my cousin Bruno Rodriguez Rodriguez. We were told at the Ayuntamiento that we should see the restaurant Los Palmeras. The charming restaurant and their staff Carmen and her daughter cooked up the very best food and wine. We would love to go back to San Juan de La Rambla to enjoy that wonderful villa.

We have been to the restaurant mentioned above and we were very pleased with everything. In a showcase you can even choose the fish you want. I recommend eating the most tipical dish called vieja (cooked fish with oil and vinegar with the tipically salt-potatoes)
