San Miguel de Abona

San Miguel de Abona in the South of Tenerife

A mix of the old and new...
The richly varied municipality of San Miguel de Abona in the south of the island is a melting-pot mix of the old and the new, embracing the solitude of the mountains and pine forests, the quiet tradition of fishing villages on the Costa del Silencio and the new modern face of Tenerife in the form of the rapidly developing tourist centres of Golf del Sur and Amarilla Golf.

Visitors to the municipality find lots to do and discover in this predominantly rural area, from walking or horse riding up in the mountains to windsurfing and a variety of other water sports down on the coast.

Its administrative centre, the picturesque town of San Miguel, is one of the oldest in the south of Tenerife, combining narrow streets with classic Canarian architecture. The parish church of San Miguel is well worth a visit for its fine painting of Christ.
There are a number of important archaeological sites in the area, ranging from cave settlements to burial grounds, in La Aldea, Barranco Orchilla, Barranco de la Tafetana and Barranco del Pilón, all sites were Guanche remains have been found. A pre-historic coastal settlement can be seen at Guargacho.

The house-barn at Aldea Blanca farm is another left over from the days when the area was the main provider of food for the southern part of the island. Its oval-shaped milling stone is the only one of its type still found on the island.

Golf del Sur opened in 1987 and has been host to a number of European PGA Tour events. Originally designed by Pepe Gancedo, the Links Course was redesigned by Manuel Piñero in 2005.

Golf del Sur has also been the setting for two golf driving distance records, both of which were set by Britain's Karl Woodward, who broke the legendary 400-yard barrier with a drive of 408 yards.
