Taganana is one of the oldest and most peaceful settlements on the island of Tenerife - it is also one of the most difficult to get to.

One of the most remote villages on Tenerife, Taganana is a paradise for walkers and nature lovers.

Until as recently as 1960, the only ways in or out of the fishing village were by boat or foot. However, a tunnel through a mountain solved the communication problem, though the new road is a twisting, winding affair that's not for the faint-hearted.

The reward for the effort is a peaceful little village with steep mountain slopes descending from the forests of the Anaga mountains down to the Atlantic Ocean.

The small village square is next to the parish church. Should you wish to explore this delightful old church you will need to call at house No. 13 opposite to get the key.

Taganana is famous for surfing, but take care because sometimes the currents are dangerous. You should observe locals where they take the wave before you try by yourself.
