The largest of the seven Canary Islands is Tenerife. About 43% of the Canarian inhabitants live there, and among tourists Tenerife is the most popular of the Canaries.

In February 1999 my friends and I decided to book flights to Tenerife as we wanted to spend a great time at the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Before the trip we had created extraordinary costumes for our participation in that special event. We really enjoyed having parties in the streets, dancing to music of Caribbean rhythms, drinking Sangría and meeting people from anywhere. There were many interesting bands and orchestras playing in the streets. The atmosphere was just brilliant! I guess you can imagine we did not sleep too much. My personal highlight was DJ Armand Van Helden´s performance at the Santa Cruz Dance Carnival on Monday of Carnival.

Tenerife is a fantastic vacation place for nightlife in general. We liked the evening programs in our hotel in Playa de las Americas a lot. In the week after Carnival there was a karaoke show for everyone, and me and my friends sang a song which was originally recorded by the Spice Girls.

Playa de las Americas is the perfect location for going out. We spend a lot of time during the nights in the clubs. My favourite one was Tramps, the most popular night club of the island. I admit it was not cheap at all. However, some of our Canarian friends knew one of the guys working there, and so we got entrance and at least a few drinks for free. One night we were not into dancing that much, so we decided to spend some time at Brannigans, a small pub where the DJ played Indie music most of the time.

If you still look for a place where to spend your next party vacation, do not hesitate and a book a flight to Tenerife – it is a real nightlife paradise.

British blues legend Joe Cocker has switched the venue of his Tenerife concert on July 10 to the Pabellon Santiago Martin in La Laguna.

Sheffield-born Cocker, who will be 63 by the time of the concert, embarked on a mammoth Europe-wide tour this month that will see him play 34 venues in Spain, Greece, Georgia, Lithuania, Russia, Poland, France, Ireland, England, Holland, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Norway and Denmark in little over two months.

He has two dates in the Canary Islands, in La Laguna on July 10 and Gran Canaria the following day.

Now based in America, Cocker’s musical career goes back over 40 years to his first UK number one in November 1968, a cover version of the Beatles song With a Little Help from My Friends.

He followed it up with Delta Lady but then hit the big time in the States after a storming gig at the Woodstock festival in 1969, where his gravelly voice proved popular, leading to several chart entries.

His career has been interrupted by drugs and alcohol problems but he bounced back in the 1980s and 1990s, notching up a string of hits, most notably Your Are So Beautiful, Unchain My Heart and the classic Up Where We Belong, the Grammy Award-winning song from the movie An Office and a Gentleman, which he performed with Jennifer Warnes.

The set for his European tour will include all of his hits mentioned above, plus other chart successes such as You Can Leave Your Hat On, Cry Me A River, I Put A Spell On You, She Came In Through The Bathroom Window and Maybe I’m Amazed.

Tickets for his Tenerife concert can be ordered online at www.generaltickets.com or at the Pabellon Santiago Martin box office on the day itself. The concert starts at 9pm.

The skies over Socorro beach in the north of Tenerife will be ablaze with colour between April 27 and May 1 when the third Los Realejos International Paragliding Festival takes place.

The five-day festival will feature some of the world’s leading exponents of the arts of paragliding, hang gliding and parachuting.

The festival has quickly established itself on the international schedule of paragliding events, due in no small part to the fact that Tenerife offers perfect all-year-round conditions for the sport.

At the first staging of the event two years ago, two new world records were set, one for paramotor altitude at 5,395 metres and the other in acrobatics when 75 manoeuvres were achieved in a vertical tumble of 1,900 metres, massively overhauling the previous record of 30.

The first day of this year’s festival will be devoted to a welcoming party, checking of participants’ credentials and an official opening.

The real fun gets underway the following morning with first take-offs set for 11am.

Among the record attempts planned for this year is a crack at the world paramotor distance mark in which Spanish pilots César Maldonado, Francisco Renedo, Ramón López Santiago and Ramón Morillas will endeavour to fly from Andalucia in mainland Spain to Los Realejos.

The leading Spanish pilots taking part in the festival will be joined by a galaxy of world’ leaders in the sport from Austria, the United States, Venezuela, the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland and Japan.

Running alongside the aerial activities will be a series of concerts, which will culminate in a spectacular and colourful pyromusic show as the climax to the closing ceremony.

The International Street Arts Festival, now in its third year, takes place in the central streets, squares and around the harbour of Puerto, with a staggering 73 performances lined up over the three days. Entry to most of the activities is free.

Last year the festival drew an estimated 15,000 visitors to the town.

This event is a cultural showcase for Canarian innovation in comedy, theatre, dancing, music, photography, painting.

These include shows such as a vertical dance group, who perform on the sides of buildings; a theatre company who out their audiences in boats to tell them stories about sailors and fishermen; a story kitchen where tales are told to the accompaniment of the flavours and aromas they feature; and a competition for human statues.

The first event, body painting, starts at 6pm on Friday and various other activities follow across the town until well after midnight.

On Saturday, the day’s programme starts at 11am and again continues beyond the witching hour.

Sunday’s activities start at 10am and festival draws to a close around lunchtime

The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra is to tour Texas in the summer as part of a series of cultural exchanges between the Canary Islands and the Lone Star state.

The tour will begin in Houston, Texas’s largest city, on June 28, moving on to historic San Antonio – scene of the famous Battle of the Alamo in 1836 – on June 30.

San Antonio, now a city of over a million people, was founded in 1718 by settlers from the Canary Islands.

Further concerts are scheduled for Fort Worth on July 2, Laredo on July 4 and Corpus Christi on July 6.

•The Auditorio de Tenerife, home of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra.

Over 100 musicians and technicians will make the journey from Tenerife for a programme of music that will be typically Spanish in flavour, featuring zarzuela, or light opera, and works by Granados and Falla.

The orchestra will be conducted by Edmon Colomer, while the soloist will be Tenerife soprano Raquel Lojendio.

The Orquesta Sinfonica de Tenerife (OST) has a long history, dating back to its formation as the Chamber Orchestra of the Canaries in 1935.

The orchestra is no stranger to touring, having appeared in all of the major cities on the Spanish mainland and featured regularly in music festivals across Europe.

The OST is based in the island capital of Santa Cruz, at the city’s recently-opened magnificent concert hall, the Auditorio de Tenerife.
