Riikka to defend Tenerife golf title

Thursday, April 19th, 2007
The island of Tenerife stages the first tournament of the 2007 Ladies European Golf Tour from May 3-6. The Tenerife Ladies Open has been an annual feature on the tour calendar for six years. This year’s event, at Golf Del Sur, San Miguel de Abona, carries a prize fund of nearly £200,000. Last year’s winner, 29-year-old Riikka Hakkarainen from Finland, is set to defend her title from a field of 126 competitors. Her victory last year is her only one to date on the European circuit but it was enough to propel her to ninth place in the order of merit. A similar performance this season would earn her a place in the European team to take on America in the Solheim Cup in September, the women’s golf equivalent of the Ryder Cup.
