Family Vacation on Tenerife

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011
Tenerife is one of my favourite vacation locations. The climate is mild and springlike all year round and there are many things to see and to do on the island. I like to combine a few relaxing days on the beach with some sightseeing and adventure and Tenerife offers many options. Me and my family enjoy staying at Puerto de la Cruz. The town has a long tradition as a tourist center, well known for its relaxing atmosphere. During the daytime the sand beach and the lush, tropical gardens of the city invite for some hours of sunbathing and swimming. In the evenings the restaurants in the area around Plaza del Charco offer good food and family entertainment.

Record number of Brits heading for the sun

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007
In the great British Easter get-away stakes, Tenerife is leading the field. According to ABTA (the Association of British Travel Agents) London's three airports, Heathrow Gatwick and Stansted will preside over the departure of over a million sun-seeking passengers. And the largest proportion of them will be heading for Tenerife, with the southern resorts of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos likely to receive most of them. Spain is also high on the list of popular holiday hot spots with Brits, followed by Turkey, Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco. It’s all part of a record British Easter period, with around 2,500,000 want-aways set to leave the country by the weekend. The UK Met Office is advising tourists to pack an umbrella and waterproofs as many European destinations are forecast to receive heavy rain over the next week. However, those ...

Just another Tenerife sunset

Saturday, March 17th, 2007
Sunset at La Paz Sunsets over Tenerife can be pretty spectacular, as this shot taken from the mirador at La Paz, Puerto de la Cruz, clearly demonstrates. The scientific explanation for the vivid colours we see as the sun goes down revolves around the low angle scattering of light off fine particles of dust, soot, smoke and ash. One of the reasons sunsets over Tenerife can be so special is the island’s relative proximity to the Sahara Desert. For most of us, their sheer beauty is intoxicating enough not to require further explanation.

Basking in life’s simple pleasures

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007
A group of us Brits were idling away a quiet evening over a glass or two of the local vino tinto the other night when the conversation turned to what attracted us all to Tenerife. We were a mixed bunch, some staying here permanently, some as winter swallows spending up to six months a year, while others are fortunate enough to be able to holiday here two, three or even more times a year. Of course, we’re all familiar with the tourist blurb that talks about the island of eternal spring, the warm all-year-round climate and the endless hours of sunshine, all of which are good enough reasons in themselves for wanting to spend as much time here as possible. For many of us, particularly those now living on a pension, the attractions are financial, prompted by a much lower cost of living than back in the UK, with ...

Tenerife powers ahead

Thursday, March 8th, 2007
The tiny island of Tenerife is leading the world in the implementation of solar power. The largest solar energy plant in the world will soon to be in full production at Granadilla de Abona in the south of the island, contributing enough energy to the island electricity grid to power 10,000 homes. Sunshine is never in short supply on the island and the regional government is hoping that by the year 2015 as much as 30 per cent of the electricity used in the Canary Islands will be generated using wind and solar technology. The new Granadilla plant has 200 solar panels, each designed to produce 20 megawatts though early tests have shown them to be producing around 30 per cent more than predicted.
